He served as the sidekick, musical director and band leader on the entire run of both Late Show with David Letterman (from 1993 to 2015) and Late Night with David Letterman (from 1982 to 1993).

Shaffer started his musical career in 1972 when he received an invite from Stephen Schwartz to become the artistic director for the Toronto production of Godspell. It stars Andrea Martin, Victor Garber, Gilda Radner, Martin Short, Eugene Levy and Dave Thomas. He eventually played the piano for the Schwartz Broadway show called The Magic Show last 1974.
